Afsana Sharmin
Visual Artist
She completed both her BFA and MFA in Sculpture from University of Chittagong and was actively involved with the alternative art space “Porapara” between 2008 and 2012, where experimental and socially engaged artistic practices shaped her early development. Her notable projects, including Blue and To the Feminine, investigate selfhood, bodily presence, and feminine experience through material and performative language.
Afsana received the Best Award in Sculpture at the University of Chittagong Annual Fine Arts Exhibition in 2009 and an Honorable Mention Award at the 17th Young Artists’ Exhibition in 2010. She has presented solo performance-based exhibitions in 2011, 2012, and 2023, and participated in the Nippon International Performance Art Festival. Her works have been shown in more than fifty exhibitions nationally and internationally, including the Asian Art Biennale and the National Art Exhibition.
For more than nine years, Afsana has served as an educator in the Department of Fashion Studies at BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology, where she integrates sustainability, material research, participatory art practice, and community engagement into teaching and collaborative curatorial projects.
Her participation in the project Decolonial reflects her ongoing engagement with decolonial thought and her interest in questioning dominant cultural narratives through embodied, material-based, and socially responsive artistic practices.
