Afsana Sharmin is a Bangladeshi artist, curator, educator, and researcher whose interdisciplinary practice encompasses performance, installation, sculpture, drawing, and socially engaged art. Through embodied, material, and participatory methodologies, her work examines the entanglements of memory, identity, gender, trauma, and cultural inheritance, often engaging with questions of healing, resilience, and decoloniality.
Working across personal and collective narratives, Sharmin explores how lived experiences are inscribed within bodies, objects, and landscapes. Her practice frequently draws upon vernacular knowledge, material culture, and community-based processes, creating spaces where intimate histories intersect with broader social and political realities. Situated at the intersection of art, anthropology, and pedagogy, her work investigates the transformative potential of artistic practice as a mode of care, resistance, and knowledge production.
Sharmin received her BFA and MFA in sculpture from the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh. She is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Fashion Studies at BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT), Dhaka, where she integrates interdisciplinary and art-based approaches into teaching, research, and curatorial practice.
Her work has been exhibited and performed extensively in Bangladesh and internationally, including in Japan, South Korea, India, China, and Vietnam. She has participated in numerous international festivals, residencies, and exhibitions, including the Nippon International Performance Art Festival (NIPAF), Kolkata International Performance Art Festival (KIPAF), Tracing A City Residency, and the Belt and Road International Cultural Festival. Her work has also been presented at the Dhaka Art Summit, Asian Art Biennale, and National Art Exhibition in Bangladesh.
